Garage door cable drums sit at each end of the torsion shaft and wind the lift cables as the torsion springs turn, raising and lowering the door. The drum size has to match your door height and lift type. We stock standard-lift, high-lift and vertical-lift drums sized by door height, plus Clopay EZ-Set drums.

Drum Types
- Standard lift. Cable lift drums for typical residential doors (e.g. 8′ and 12′ max), plus commercial sizes (5250-18, 800-32).
- High lift. D400-54, D800-120 and 6375-165 drums for doors that travel higher before turning horizontal.
- Vertical lift. D850 and D1100 drums for vertical-lift installs.
- Clopay EZ-Set. Left- and right-hand EZ-Set drums.
FAQ
How do I know what size cable drum I need?
Match the drum to your door height and lift type (standard, high or vertical lift), plus the cable size and shaft bore. Drums are handed (left and right), so they come as a matched pair. Match the drum number stamped on your existing drum if you can.
What's the difference between standard, high and vertical lift drums?
Standard-lift drums suit typical residential doors where the door turns horizontal just above the opening. High-lift and vertical-lift drums are grooved to let the door travel further straight up first - used where there is extra headroom or for specialty installs.
Do cable drums come in pairs?
Yes - drums are left- and right-handed, so they are sold as a matched pair. Replacing both keeps the cables winding evenly and the door balanced.
Can I replace cable drums myself?
The drums sit on the torsion shaft, which is under spring tension, so the springs must be unwound first. This is advanced work - if you are not experienced with torsion spring tension, have a professional do it.
