How to choose a garage door keypad
- Find your opener brand on the motor unit label.
- Check how it learns codes. A LEARN or PROGRAM button means rolling code: pick a keypad for that brand and LEARN button color. A row of DIP switches means fixed code: pick a DIP switch keypad with the same frequency.
- Two different openers? A universal keypad covers both.
| Opener brand | Keypads |
|---|---|
| LiftMaster | L979S, L979M, L979U, 877LM, myQ Video Keypad |
| Chamberlain / Craftsman | Same LiftMaster keypads, matched by LEARN button color |
| Genie / Overhead Door | GK-BX, GUK-BX universal |
| Linear, Multi-Code, Stanley | Linear DTKP, NMTK, Multi-Code 4200, Digi-Code DC5200, DC5202, Stanley 2986 |
| Marantec, Sommer, Hormann, Wayne Dalton | Marantec 104053, Sommer 4078V003, Hormann FCT3B, Wayne Dalton 297138, 327308 |
Universal garage door keypads
- LiftMaster L979U: LiftMaster, Chamberlain and Craftsman (all LEARN colors), Genie and Overhead Door (1995 on), Linear, Wayne Dalton, Sommer, Ryobi and more.
- Genie GUK-BX: up to 3 openers of any brand on its chart, including several DIP switch systems.
Keypad not working?
- Replace the battery (9V for most LiftMaster and Chamberlain keypads, AAA for Genie GK keypads).
- Reprogram the keypad to the opener.
- Try the remote and wall button. If they fail too, the opener needs attention.
Worn lid or buttons? Many keypads have replacement covers, so you may not need a whole new keypad. Call 877-379-4947 with your keypad's model number.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I reset a garage door keypad?
Most keypads are reset from the opener: hold the LEARN or PROGRAM button until its light goes out to erase all keypads and remotes, then reprogram the ones you keep. Genie GK keypads reset by holding PROGRAM and UP/DOWN for about 5 seconds. To just change the PIN, follow your keypad's PIN-change steps.
Why is my garage door keypad not working?
Start with a new battery: most LiftMaster and Chamberlain keypads use a 9V, Genie GK keypads use AAA. If the keys light but the door doesn't move, reprogram the keypad to the opener. If the remote and wall button don't work either, the problem is the opener.
How do I program a garage door keypad?
On most openers made since the mid-1990s, press the LEARN or PROGRAM button on the motor unit, then enter a PIN on the keypad and press ENTER, HOME or UP/DOWN until the opener runs. Fixed-code keypads are set with DIP switches to match the opener instead. Steps differ by brand, so follow the keypad's manual.
Will a universal garage door keypad work with my opener?
Usually, if your opener was made after 1993 and has safety sensors at the bottom of the door track. The LiftMaster L979U and Genie GUK-BX program to most major brands, and the GUK-BX can run up to 3 openers. Check the brand list on the keypad's page first.
