Is it really the motor?
Motors fail less often than the parts around them. Check these first; they're cheaper and easier to replace.
| Symptom (LiftMaster / Chamberlain) | Likely cause |
|---|---|
| Brief hum, door doesn't move | Broken springs (call a door technician), door lock engaged, trolley stuck on the stop bolt, or a bad capacitor |
| Hums about 30 seconds, trolley moves | Door is disconnected: reconnect it with the emergency release handle |
| Still hums after a new capacitor | Motor is damaged: replace the motor |
| Hums until you unplug it | Receiver logic board |
| Motor runs, grinding, no movement | Stripped drive gear: see gear kits |

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if my garage door opener motor is bad?
Rule out the cheaper parts first. On LiftMaster and Chamberlain chain, belt and screw drive openers, a brief hum usually means broken springs, an engaged door lock, the trolley stuck on the stop bolt, or a bad capacitor. If the opener still hums after you replace the capacitor, LiftMaster says the motor is damaged. A hum that lasts until you unplug the opener points to the logic board.
Can I replace just the motor instead of the whole opener?
Often, yes. LiftMaster sells motor replacement kits, such as the 041-0236-000 for DC openers made after 2011 and the 041A6095 for 8500-series wall-mount openers. Match the part to your opener's model number and parts list; motors aren't interchangeable between models.
Why does my garage door opener run but the door doesn't move?
If the motor runs for about 30 seconds and only the trolley moves, the door is probably disconnected: reconnect it with the emergency release handle. If you hear grinding with no movement, check the drive gear; a stripped gear kit is a common, inexpensive repair.
