How to adjust chain tension (LiftMaster / Chamberlain)
- Close the door with the remote or wall control.
- Pull the emergency release handle to disconnect the door from the opener.
- Find the two adjustment nuts on the threaded shaft of the inner trolley. Loosen the outer nut (closest to the door).
- Tighten the outer nut until the chain sits about 1/2" (T-rail) or 1/4" (square rail) above the base of the rail at its midpoint, then tighten the inner nut.
- Reconnect the door and test the safety reversal: the door must reverse when it touches a 2x4 laid flat on the floor.
Need a master link? The 4A1008 fits LiftMaster #48 chain. Chain spreaders such as the 41A4208-2 are in rail parts.

Frequently Asked Questions
How tight should a garage door opener chain be?
On LiftMaster and Chamberlain openers, the chain should sit about 1/2" above the base of the rail at its midpoint on a T-rail, or 1/4" on a square rail. Release the door from the opener before you adjust. A chain that is too loose or too tight can cause sprocket noise. Some droop with the door closed is normal if the chain returns to position when the door is open.
How do I find the right replacement chain?
Match the brand and your door height: LiftMaster chain kits come for 7', 8', 10', 12' and 14' doors, and Genie, Linear and Chamberlain chains are also sold by door height. The part number is in your opener's owner's manual parts list. Commercial operators use bulk roller chain (#40, #41 or #48) cut to length with a master link.
