Use your opener brand's own battery. Backup batteries aren't interchangeable between brands. Check the part number on your old battery or the opener's manual.

What the battery LED means (LiftMaster / Chamberlain)
- Solid green: battery fully charged.
- Flashing green: charging.
- Solid orange (while the motor runs): running on battery power; the opener also beeps every 2 seconds.
- Flashing orange: battery low.
- Solid red: the battery no longer holds a charge. Replace it.
On battery power
During an outage the opener runs slower, and the opener lights, myQ app control and timer-to-close are switched off. Remotes, keypads and the wall control keep working. A new LiftMaster battery needs about 24 hours to charge fully; Genie recommends 48 hours of charging before you test its battery backup.

How long does a garage door opener backup battery last?
LiftMaster says its backup battery lasts about 1 to 2 years with normal use. A fully charged LiftMaster or Chamberlain battery gives up to 24 hours of standby, with up to 20 full door cycles. Replace it when the battery LED turns solid red or the opener starts beeping.
Why is my garage door opener beeping?
On Chamberlain and LiftMaster openers with battery backup, a beep every 2 seconds means the opener is running on battery power. A beep every 30 seconds means the battery is low; if the battery LED is solid red, replace the battery. To stop the beeping until a new battery arrives, unplug the opener, disconnect the battery, then plug the opener back in.
How do I change the battery in a LiftMaster garage door opener?
Unplug the opener, remove the battery cover with a Phillips screwdriver, take out the old battery, connect the red (+) and black (-) wires to the new 485LM battery, refit the cover and plug the opener back in. The battery takes about 24 hours to fully charge.
Can I add a battery backup to any opener?
No. Battery backup only works on openers built for it, usually DC motor models with a backup port or compartment, and you must use the opener maker's own battery. Genie, for example, says other brands' backups won't operate its openers.
